Vice versus Virtue: Sandy Burnett explores Handel’s first Italian oratorio
‘Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno’ is an amazingly precocious work, written in Florence in 1707 by a stunningly talented young man who was just twenty-two years of age. What’s more, he was a complete outsider – a northern Saxon Protestant who’d only just arrived in the city the previous year.
Sandy Burnett, all-round musician, Arts Society lecturer and Academy of Ancient Music’s Hogwood Fellow, discusses the background to this oratorio, the context of the libretto, Handel’s free and easy approach to borrowing the music of himself and others – and of course, some of the jewels in the score.
Mr Burnett’s lecture will start just before the concert at 5.45pm and lasts an hour. This would allow for a short break of 30 minutes between the talk and the concert.
