Founded in 2012 in Paris by Samuel Rotsztejn, Les Contre-Sujets brings together young musicians keen on sharing their passion for baroque music with a wide audience.
Among the various activities of Contre-Sujets, the most recent include a Jeunes Ensembles residence at La Cité de la Voix in Vézelay, won in 2014.
Les Contre-Sujets were among the four ensembles invited by the Gättingen International Handel Contest in 2015, where they were accompanied by the great German actress Hanna Schygulla who introduced all the historical and musical aspects that motivated the choice of programme. In May, Les Contre-Sujets were among the five finalists selected by the 1st International Val de Loire Competition, chaired by William Christie. The ensemble was then selected to join the European programme EEEmerging d'Ambronay.
Following their summer residency at the Ambronay Cultural Centre, Les Contre-Sujets performed live on Radio 4 from the concertgebouw in Amsterdam and were invited to participate in the Fringe Concerts MAfestival in Bruges and the Oude Muziek festival in Utrecht.
In December 2015, the National Center for Early Music in York welcomed the ensemble for a residency that ended with a participation in their Christmas Festival. Following its participation in the EEEmerging Festival in Ambronay, the group were invited to take up a residency in Slovenia and Italy in 2016.
Les Contre-Sujets celebrated their 50th concert in April 2016 at the Phénix de Valenciennes.
