Ensemble Flame

The harpsichord and the viola da gamba were the only instruments, besides the guitar, theorbo and flute, played in King Louis XIVth’s chamber, where the music of Marin Marais, François Couperin and Antoine Forqueray amused the king with their soft and intimate sonorities. In the same setting that poets such as Jean Racine recited poetry by candlelight, the musicians created a musical poetry using the poets’ rhyme, rhythm and verses.

Dedicated especially to French music, Ensemble Flame transmits the instruments’ warmth by imagining the music as a poem, appeasing our wavering spirits invaded by the passion of the soul. Based in Paris where they met at the Paris Conservatory (CNSM), the international musicians Takahisa Aida (harpsichord, Japan), and Eric Tinkerhess (viola da gamba, United States) perform around the world and are described by l’Echo Républicain as “magnificent musicians.”
